As Salsa Live Bites the Dust, Gringo Rumbero Saddles up
for Bournemouth Weekend

It is now unfortunately obvious that the Warner’s Spring Bank Holiday LIVE SALSA FEST, has now passed into history. Perhaps Boogaloo Promotions will put it on at some future date with another holiday organisation.
A pretty good alternative, for those who prefer a more laid back and relaxing weekender,  including a live band, is the LATIN FESTIVAL PARADISE to be held at Bournemouth,
from Fri 18th April - Sun 20th April 08.
Event organiser is Latino Beat, Bournemouth’s premier organiser. The weekend consists of 2 days of workshops and 3 evening parties, with classes at different venues in the town. Robert Charlemagne heads the list of over 18 guest teachers.
I personally have not experienced any problem with events held in different venues, but I suppose it’s not much fun with torrential rain and a force 8 gale. Parking can be a problem in Bournemouth, but there is a good taxi service.                              The cost of weekend passes are £49 up to 29 Feb, £55 up to 31 Mar, £60 up to 17 April, £65 Door.  Special accommodation deals are available through Latino Beat from £30 ppn. To book: Tel 01202 421104

Salsa Ain’t Just for Latinos!

Hi Ed - I just read the letter fom Latina Annie (See Letters). First, I would like to say in response "lighten up" Salsa is not a religion. I also don't think it belongs to just one group of people. Latin people who, like most of us, are a mixture of different races, are not the only ones to have passion and feeling and I don't believe that you have to be born with it.

Passion and 'feeling' (?) can come to any one of us at any time and is not owned by any one culture. I dance and I teach. I most certainly have passion for dancing and the women I dance with. I do not, like just about all the dancers I know, dance salsa for fashion. I dance because it makes me feel fantastic, (Is that enough of a 'feeling'?) and because I love to socialise with people from so many different countries.
If I was teaching solely for the money I would have given up long ago. I teach because I love to pass on my knowledge, to then see these students take what I have shown them and develop it in their own way. The knowledge no longer belongs to me. It’s theirs to do what they like with it. Salsa has evolved from how it was first danced, as has the music. You can choose to dance it how you like and, no one particular way is right.

Diablo Cats Dance Purformance Company prove Ginger Toms and Tabbies salsa with feeling and passion.

If you can keep time with the music, your partner can follow you and, most importantly, you are both enjoying yourselves then, I don't think anyone has the right to tell you that what you are doing is wrong.
So, come on Annie, think positive thoughts, not negative. Don't hide yourself away with just one group of people. Go out and mix and accept what other people have to give you. If people like the way you dance they will copy you. But be prepared for them then to change it! Philippe Retourne,
www.salsadanceparties.co.uk Looks like non-Latinos can write with feeling and passion too - over to you, Latinas, Latinos and others - agree or disagree? We’ll post your comments here! Ed. London Salsa, 19 Jan 07.

LONDON SALSA SCENE EXCLUSIVE: OUR HIDDEN CAMERA REVEALS...

Morris Men Dancing to Madonna’s Greatest Hits: We Have Proof!

Once again Strictly Come Dancing will be on our screens. There is no doubt that this TV programme has boosted the number of people attending salsa classes; at least that is the case with my local club.  However in my opinion salsa has been consistently misrepresented on this show.
The problem is that it is organised and run mainly in conjunction with the Ballroom Mafia. For instance Chris Marques & Jaclyn Spencer although no doubt worthy champions, won the UKA competition, which is the competition recognised by the Ballroom Fraternity. Last year at one point there was featured a display of mambo dancing led by them. It appeared that

Secretly filmed outside Madge and Guy Ritchie’s Wiltshire pad - Morris Men dancing to Pappa Don’t Preach. spot Mad

all the couples involved apart from Chris & Jaclyn were ballroom dancers. Why were they not salsa dancers?
I was watching the ice dance competition on TV during the last Winter Olympics when to my surprise, I noticed that during a salsa sequence, the skaters were competing using real salsa music, tunes that I recognised.  So why is virtually no authentic salsa music ever used at the salsa stage of the  competition?
You will never see Morris dancers dance to Madonna, so why should salsa be danced to Lionel Ritchie, or as Brendon Cole did, to Hot Hot Hot? Did he not know that this is soca not salsa?  Although not the case in other dance forms, the music is the cornerstone of salsa and includes some of the most exciting dance music known today.
As an extremely entertaining dance, salsa performed by top salsa dancers needs no added artifice, posing and posturing; so why can't it be represented as it is?                                                    Richard M.

Material Girl: we spotted this on Madge’s sideboard.

I am not Richard M!

I’m on my first date; but where do I take my girl to dine and dance?

Dear Ed,
I haven’t been dancing very long but I met this gorgeous girl and you know, we’ve had a few dances together. She’s agreed to go out on a date with me tonight (Friday 27), a sort of a date, maybe it’s not, anyway we’re going out together.
We said we’d go for a meal, salsa class and club, make an evening of it. Trouble is,
I’m not sure where to take her - what should
I do?

Dave, Fulham
Ed Replies:

Dave, anyone who’s that unsure whether he’s on a date or not is definitely on a date. Check out our events page, tonight only - Mambo City Congress; Afro Cuban Jam, last Friday of every month; Tito’s in London Bridge; Salsa! on the Charing Cross Cross; a great vibe, but not cheap - Floridita in Soho; try cocktails and dinner at La Bodeguita del Medio in Kensington, but no dancing.

But you’ve got us thinking. Where are the HOTTEST SALSA SPOTS in town and beyond to DRINK, DINE & DANCE RIGHT NOW??? WHERE IS THE VIBE??? We’re going to find ‘em for you!!! It’s a dirty job, but somebody’s got to do it. If you’ve got recommendations
CLICK HERE to email us. And Dave - don’t forget to write in and let us know how the hot date went!
