Best of London Salsa: We Lose Andrea and Osbanis

Osbanis Tejeda & Andrea Stewart Both Quit UK in June 2007

Over the coming month, the UK salsa community is to lose two of its most creative artists, instructors and performers - Osbanis Tejeda and Andrea Stewart, writes Editor, www.londonsalsascene.info 7 May 2007.
Osbanis - master of musical interpretation and improvisation - is a past UK Salsa Champion and Rueda World Champion while Andrea - mistress of smoldering salsa - has not received official and much deserved

recognition.                     London Salsa Scene has a couple of un-official awards to make of its own to these two remarkable individuals.
The LSS award for the title of official world salsa champion for sabor, passion, dedication, creativity, feeling for the music, inspirational teacher, performer and dancer goes to

Andrea Stewart and Osbanis Tejeda.
They are quite simply, irreplaceable and totally non-expendable. We would like to wish both Os and Andrea every success and happiness in their new locations.

Best of London Salsa: Osbanis interview

Osbanis - why I love Rumba

People think they know Rumba... they know the name but they don’t know Rumba.... Rumba is just enjoy, is to feel in a new way - you feel something and you move how you feel, you just do it. Rumba is just dancing, not moves.... London Salsa Post Friday 8 Dec 2006

...“I come from Cerro - the home of the Barrio, of Rumba, Rueda and Timba, the new rhythm. This is a very rich area and these are my home. I live with this element. My mother is a dancer, a natural dancer, my father is a musician. In Cuba, I was a percussionist, playing the congas.”...
In Cuba, we dance normally, we don’t dance Salsa. Salsa is a commercial dance, for the tourists.  We dance and play Rap, Disco, Reggeaton, Mambo, Cha-cha, Son.”...
...“
Years ago, I wasn’t interested for Rumba only since living in the UK I miss Rumba. I prefer to dance Rumba, there is more feeling. Rumba helps 100 per cent for dancing, for movement, for control your body. Rumba is just a feeling, a sentimento...if like it, do it, Rumba helps people enjoy.”...
...“
The main Rumba I teach is Gua Guanco; Colombian Rumba is just for the man, not something you can teach - it is the Orishas (Gods of the Santaria). Listen to what is Rumba. You have to understand Spanish; if the sonero says something nice for the woman, don’t do something bad!”...
...“
In Rumba, don’t start dancing when the Sonero starts singing - wait for the Montuno (chorus); it is illegal! There is no count in Rumba. To count in Rumba is illegal!People have to know about Rumba - it is the patron of Salsa. Salsa has Rumba within it, without Rumba, there is no Salsa.”...
...
To a Cuban, Rumba makes you a Cuban, it is inside you. 50 years ago, there were no Salseros - only Rumberos. When you dance, listen to the music, feel the music in every part of your body, dancing is not about moves. Listen to the music and enjoy - the girl and the man have a nice time.

Best London Salsa: Cuban Salsa, 3rd Feb 2008

Kerry Ribchester’s Juicy Cuban

Master Classes

Kerry Ribchester - one of the UK’s leading experts on Cuban style Salsa - led a four hour master class on Cuban body movement at the Chisenhale Dance Spance, Chisenhale Road, Bow E3 this Sunday (3rd February).
Just back from Cuba, inspiration and passion pouring out of her and on a one woman mission to put the fun back into salsa, this workshop was designed to reach the bits other salsa classes don’t even know exist. The result - curvacious and sassy salsa for the gals and loose-limbed machismo for the guys.
The only hurdle was  finding the venue in the back of beyond in London’s East-end. Apparently, when asked, even locals had no idea where the studio was. Make sure you pack an A-Z, especially if like me you don’t know your Mile End from your Whitechapel.
Kerry’s last masterclass session in this series is on 16th MARCH (10 - 2pm), recapping on all workshops plus Reggaeton. SEE
EVENTS FOR MORE & HOW TO BOOK.
